Two-Year
Multi-Disciplinary Study
Completed December 2007
The completion of the Nunavut-Manitoba
Route Selection Study represents the culmination of a
cooperative effort between the KIA, Manitoba, Nunavut and
Canada to establish a preferred alignment for an
all-weather road connecting the Kivalliq Region and
Northern Manitoba. In addition to connecting to the North American
road system, this new road would also enhance
opportunities for resource development such as mining and
tourism; benefit employment, small business development
and standard of living; and reduce the cost of
transporting people and goods between the Kivalliq Region
and urban centres in Manitoba. Please review the final
newsletters for more information. With the completion of the Route
Selection Study, a minimum five-year road development
period is estimated for detailed route mapping,
environmental assessment, permitting, functional and
detailed engineering. Your comments are important to this project. Please
feel free to contact members of the Project Working Group
and your local government representatives for any comments
on this study or possible future phases of the
Nunavut-Manitoba road.

Nunavut-Manitoba
Route Selection Study
Nunavut and Manitoba, Canada |
|
The
preferred route, known as the Eastern Alternative, was
presented through a series of public consultations
throughout the study region. It was evident that the public
expressed support for this route. The
rational behind choosing this route includes:
-Most effective, safe and reliable route
in light of its length, the terrain, the lowest
construction and maintenance costs and ease of staging
-Strong support from affected communities
-Moderate environmental impact due to
shortest length of new road construction
-Greatest potential for early implementation to address
trade opportunities, national
sovereignty and security needs.
